WLP207 Growing a Remote Organisation
The first of our topic-led episodes. Following the What’s Going On? section, where Pilar covers the latest stories in the sphere of remote work and the future of work, we explore a subject related to remote teams and leadership through different points of view.
03.17 WHAT’S GOING ON?
Today’s “What’s Going On?” segment includes the following:
- Harvard Business School’s research summary “How Companies Benefit When Employees Work Remotely”
This research is about “working from anywhere” not just working from home, which is what many organisations think of when they introduce remote work. The implications in worker’s lives are considerate…
The article also gives us a handy bit of vocabulary: When considering introducing remote work in your team, think about the level of interdependence required between coworkers: pooled interdependence, reciprocal interdependence, or sequential interdependence.
We are preparing an episode on how remote work can result in social change and we’d love to hear from you if you have any articles to recommend reading, any guests to suggest, or if you have anything to say about it yourself - get in touch.
Pilar picks some highlights from Flexjobs 2019 Annual Survey. Some of the factors for seeking flexible work that surprised Pilar: avoiding office politics and distractions, and being a pet owner! Will “living in a bad local job market” be a factor that becomes more important in the future?

21.40 Growing a Remote Organisation
In this episode, we hear from how different people are going about growing their companies. They have different customers, different recruitment processes and different ideas about the size and make up of their workforce. However, they have one thing in common: their employees are distributed over different geographical locations.
In this episode you will meet, in order of appearance:
Here are some of the things our guests and host talk about:
24.10mins. Wade Foster and Jeremiah Smith talk about their first steps in setting up the company and why they decided to set up their businesses. Our guests explain why they started to employ people at Zapier and Simple Tiger.
31.10mins. Pilar explains the nature of employment at Virtual not Distant; Wade explains how they recruit at Zapier; Jeremiah talks about his own process when looking for other people to hire; while third guest Tim Burgess takes on a different strategy when looking for employees for Shield GEO.
45.00mins. So far, hiring for remote seems very similar to hiring for colocated. However, there is one thing that makes a huge difference when you’re growing a remote company: Timezone differences. Tim and Wade discuss their thoughts and experiences around hiring globally and asynchronous (and text-based) communication specifically.
55.20mins. Hiring globally means that you can grow and grow and grow and grow… but that’s not on everyone’s mind.
