Bonus Series: How the World of Work and Our Attitudes to Work are Changing
As a result of the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic, the attitudes towards remote work and the office have shifted. But how?
This 3-episode series features three different guests bringing you the analysis of recent surveys about preferences around remote work, future use of offices and employees’ concerns around safety.
WLP254 Remote Work Survey in Ireland
In this episode, Pilar talks to Katerina Bohle Carbonell, founder of NetNigma, about the results of the Remote Working during COVID-19: Ireland’s National Survey, Phase II. This work was carried out with the support of the Whitaker Institute, NUI Galway and the Western Development Commission. Katerina is one of the four authors.
The survey presents findings on employee preferences of where they want to work, and how much workers now realise they prefer to be in the office. It also addresses loneliness and isolation and how the quality of our physical workspaces impacts our work. Katerina also comments on the differences between this survey and the one carried out earlier on in the year.
Katerina and Pilar discuss those findings that have surprised them and those that haven’t, including the differences and similarities between age groups and plans of respondents to relocate their homes.

WLP255 Will hybrid workspaces work in the UK?
Business journalist and writer, Andrew Saunders, joins Pilar for a discussion about the findings of his recent study done in the UK around hybrid workspaces - Will Hybrid Working Ever Work? - and offers thoughts on where people will be doing their work in the future.
Andrew shares overall findings on what leaders really think about the return to the office, and how their office spaces will be used (or not) in the future.
Andrew and Pilar also talk about hybrid workspaces and how working from home, even during a pandemic, seems to have increased productivity, creativity and motivation but not collaboration. (Is that because online collaboration takes longer to adopt?)

WLP256 Current Employees’ Concerns in the Workplace
In this final episode of the bonus series, Pilar’s guest is Dr. Chris Mullen, the executive director at The Workforce Institute at Ultimate Kronos Group (UKG).
After an initial short exchange around Chris’ area specialist area, work-life negotiation, our two voices move onto UKG’s findings.
Their recent research uses a global lens to look at employee concerns around physical safety, psychological security, and job stability. The survey explores employees’ opinions on their employers’ response to the pandemic as well as top needs and concerns for the workforce going forward into 2021.
